I took a 7 week coast to coast road trip after being laid off from Boeing. I didn’t have a camper but realized that being able to pull off the road at a rest or truck stop was the way to go to make the trip affordable. With a few sheets of 1/2” plywood and misc. hardware this is what I came up with. The effort was well worth the time and materials.
Gonna get here soon, gonna get here real real soon.

“Leaving is not enough. You must stay gone. Train your heart like a dog. Change the locks even on the house he’s never visited…You loved a man with more hands than a parade of beggars, and here you stand. Heart like a four-poster bed. Heart like a canvas. Heart leaking something so strong they can smell it in the street.”

If I were to sit in this chair
when you come into the room
you would think it odd—funny
but go on about your business
cocking your puzzled face
because there is no reason for my sitting here laughing
I am not laughing
But if I were to sit here
when you come into the room
you would shy away
from my breaking heart
as much as to say Why do you do this
Now I hear you coming down the hall
I do not know whether I will laugh or cry
Your key inserted in the lock

At Ishinomaki Where Matsuo Basho Once Wrote a Poem
Finally the twisted roadbed drains
and the daily floodtides at
Ishinomaki dry out.
The sky unmists itself and
loss upon loss begins to
feel like company.
Nothing touches. Nights are brittle and soft,
ink scraped smooth.
To the south Fukushima Daiichi blazes. Flames
we can’t see. Sixty-six years ago
two other seacoast towns vanished.
I stick my forearm out
in moonlight. Looking seaward
my skin burns.

Hermosa Beach, CA
Keep unknowingly seeing these flashes of the south bay in my feed and then scrolling back up, desperate, certain. This one is just a couple blocks from my childhood home. That auto shop has been there forever. I miss California so bad, so brokenheartedly. Bu I would know it anywhere, I realize now, and this is comforting.
